Grand Hotel Birmingham names general manager

UK: The five-star property Grand Hotel Birmingham has appointed Johan Scheepers as general manager following a £45 million restoration and refurbishment.

Scheepers has held several managerial roles throughout his international career in luxury hotels.

Past positions include general manager of hospitality at the Sun City Resort in South Africa, general manager of IHG’s Kimpton Charlotte Square in Edinburgh, and general manager of IHG’s Kimpton Clocktower in Manchester, among others.

At The Grand Hotel Birmingham, Scheepers will oversee the property’s 185 rooms and suites, 10 event spaces, restaurant and cocktail bar.

Scheepers said: “It’s a privilege to join the team at The Grand Hotel Birmingham and act as guardian of the next stage of its journey. The Grand is a hotel that [the city] can be proud of and, for me, the key to honouring this is how we play a part in the wider development of our vibrant, multi-cultural city.

“We are extremely proud of the hotel’s history, too. Our role is to continue to deliver intuitive service to our community, whether that’s for an international guest visiting for the first time, or a Birmingham local dining in one of our restaurants,” Scheepers added.

James Burrell, the hotel’s group CEO, said: “The Grand Hotel Birmingham continues to play a leading role in this great city’s development and we are delighted to welcome Johan on board for the next chapter in the hotel’s rich history. Johan’s wealth of luxury experience, proven success leading high performing teams and ambitious vision make him perfectly placed to guide the hotel’s future growth.”
